The Life of Paa Johnson Langsi

Early life

Paa Johnson Langsi was born in Manji Bafut in 1941 to Paa Thomas Chenwi and Mama Akoh Bukari, all of blessed memory. He was the first of two surviving children born to his parents after they had lost several children before his birth. For this reason, he was named Langsi, meaning “playing for time” in the Bafut language, because they were not certain of his own survival.
Unfortunately, his mother died when he was still of tender age. He and his sibling were then brought up in Njibujang by their aunt, Mama Maria Ngum, also of blessed memory.
After adolescence, his father sent him to learn carpentry, a vocation he learned, mastered, and practiced with passion. He worked in Ashong and Guzang in Batibo Subdivision before later settling at home in Manji Bafut. Paa Langsi became a renowned carpenter in Bafut, and many people can attest to the quality of his work in this field.
Although he did not receive formal education in his youthful age, he worked hard and attended adult classes so he could carry out measurements and estimates in his trade. He understood the value of education deeply, which is why he did all he could to send his younger siblings and especially his children to school, sacrificing all he had to ensure that his children received the best education they could.

Marital life

Paa Langsi was happily married to his wife, Mama Grace Asoh Langsi, and their wedding was celebrated at PC Manji in 1966. They were blessed with six surviving biological children and many other family children.

Christian life

Paa was a baptized Christian of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon and remained an active communicant until his death. He was an Elder and timekeeper at PC Manji in the mid-1980s. He served as President of the Hallelujah Choir for many years and died as an active member of the Hallelujah Choir Association of the PCC.
He also contributed enormously to the construction of the new church building at PC Manji.

Political life

Paa was a fervent militant of the Social Democratic Front (SDF) and gave his full support to his first son, a frontline militant of the party.

Social life

Paa was very calm, sociable, and easy-going. He was a man of very few words, listening more and talking less.
He was a man of high moral integrity, always standing firm for the truth. He was a peacemaker and served for many years as Treasurer of several associations, including MASCUDA and many others.
He was very stern and a staunch disciplinarian. He knew no boundaries when it came to disciplining any wayward child in the quarter whom he came across. He was also PTA Chairman at GS Manji in the mid-1990s.

Final years

Paa Langsi fell ill sometime in 2015. He consulted in several health institutions, including the Bamenda Regional Hospital, the Shisong Cardiac Centre, and the Douala General Hospital, where he was diagnosed with nerve-related issues.
In 2019, he was taken to Artemis Hospital in India, where he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and very little could be done for a definite cure. He returned home and continued treatment until the 5th of August, 2023, when he gave up the ghost at the Bafut District Hospital.
He leaves behind his wife, six children, twenty-three grandchildren at the time of his death, family, and friends to celebrate and remember his legacy.

Memories of Paa Langsi at our civil wedding in Bafut

Though we are sad to see you go, we are also privileged to have shared our lives with you. Our first meeting was in Bafut at your house in 2015 when your son Chenwi Elvis introduced me to you as a lady he intends to marry, and I remember so well how you welcomed me with joy and laughed so hard when I told you my name and where I came from. I remember Mangyie Akongnwi was like wow, dad really loves you from first meeting because he rarely laughs so hard like that. I was happy that I had met another Dad. Fastforward to April 2023 shortly after I gave birth to Miyanwi, you fell sick and was taken to the hospital and placed on Oxygen, and when the news got to us I exclaimed ehhhh!!! Let Paa not do this to us now and I prayed that you recover from that state and God answered my prayers. Then surprisingly on Saturday the 5th of August 2023 a call came in that you are no more!!!! You died a very peaceful dead, being a man of peace that you are. Its easy to say you are resting but so hard to digest the fact that I can’t hear you discuss with me and laugh again, ask how the kids are doing and always caring for our well being. All you left us now is memories that are deeply engraved in our hearts. You were an inspiration to us and others. We all love you, but God loves you most.

Gilbert Langsi

Celebrating the life of a remarkable man. Dad, I will always remember the profound impact you had on all of us. You were not just a father, but a guiding light, a source of unwavering support, and a wellspring of love. Your presence was like a comforting embrace, a place of refuge in times of joy and sorrow alike. You taught us the value of hard work, compassion, and resilience. Your wisdom and calmness was a beacon that guided us through life’s challenges, and your laughter was a melody that filled our hearts with joy. You were a man of integrity, with a heart that knew no bounds. You had an uncanny ability to make everyone feel special, to listen without judgment, and to offer a helping hand without hesitation. Your legacy of kindness and generosity will continue to inspire us as we strive to live up to the example you did set. The memories I hold of you are a treasure trove of love and laughter. From the simple joys of family dinners to the profound conversations that shaped my beliefs, each moment spent with you was a gift I will forever cherish. Your passion for life was infectious, and you love for your family was a bond that held us together through thick and thin. As we prepare to bid you farewell, let us not mourn the loss, but rather celebrate the life he lived. Let us honor his memory by embracing the values he instilled in us and by spreading the same love and compassion he so freely gave. Dad, you may be physically gone, but your spirit lives on in the lessons you taught us, the love you shared, and the memories we hold dear. Rest in peace, knowing that your legacy will continue to shine brightly through us. Atoh, Josephine and the kids
